SEO Costs in the UK: What Should a Small Business Pay?

SEO costs for most small businesses in the UK should fall roughly in line with £750 to £2,500 per month, although focused local work can cost less and competitive campaigns considerably more.

At Found First, a one-off SEO & GEO Visibility Audit starts at £590 and founder-led ongoing SEO starts at £1,299 per month, with the scope, deliverables and price agreed before any paid work begins.

The price alone does not tell you whether an SEO service is good value. The important questions are what work is included, who actually does it and whether the activity supports enquiries, sales or another meaningful business goal.

What affects the cost of SEO?

The same monthly budget can buy very different things. The main cost drivers are:

  • Competition: a quiet local niche needs a different plan from a national, high-value market.
  • Starting point: a sound website needs less groundwork than one with weak pages, indexing problems or neglected content.
  • Scope: technical fixes, service pages, local SEO, content, authority building and AI-search visibility all require time.
  • Implementation: providers that make agreed changes usually cost more than those that only send recommendations.
  • Provider: freelancers, independent consultants and agencies differ in overheads, capacity and access to specialists.
  • Backlinks: some services will offer backlink buying for you. Be very careful with this; it’s an easy way to spend a lot of unnecessary money. Natural, relevant backlinks are far superior in my experienced opinion. Contact me for more details on this.

A useful quote should turn these factors into a clear priority list. If the proposal could be sent unchanged to any company, I would question how much real diagnosis has taken place.

The main SEO pricing models

Monthly retainers suit continuing implementation; fixed projects suit audits or defined improvements; hourly and day rates suit advice or tightly scoped problems. An Ahrefs survey of 439 providers found that 78.2% offered monthly retainers, although its data was not limited to the UK.

The model matters less than the scope. A £600 retainer that buys four relevant hours may be better than a £1,500 package filled with reports and low-value tasks. Ask how the available time will be used.

Is cheap SEO ever worth it?

Cheap SEO can be reasonable when the task is small and explicit, such as a consultation, page review or technical fix. The problem begins when a very low monthly price promises strategy, content, technical SEO, link building and guaranteed rankings all at once.

At the cheapest end of the market, providers may depend on automated reports, generic AI content, bulk directory submissions or links with little genuine value. Some packages simply do almost nothing. My business email inbox is full of emails from companies offering low cost technical fixes – when I’ve asked for more information it’s usually followed by results from an automated scan that offer nothing of value.

Google advises businesses to ask how success will be measured, request references and avoid anyone guaranteeing first place. This is something I also take very seriously.

What should a good monthly SEO service include?

A small-business retainer should not be a rigid list of identical tasks. According to current priorities, it may include:

  • research into customer searches, competitors and commercial opportunities
  • improvements to service pages, local landing pages and conversion paths
  • technical work involving crawling, indexing, speed, duplication and internal links
  • useful content and improvement of pages that already have potential
  • local SEO, reviews and Google Business Profile work where relevant
  • credible mentions, links and other proof that strengthen trust
  • measurement of qualified enquiries, sales, visibility and supporting indicators

You should also know what changed and why. Reports are useful when they support decisions; they are not a substitute for implementation.

How much should your business spend on SEO?

Start with the value of the outcome, not a percentage copied from another company. Estimate the gross profit from a new customer, your lead-to-sale rate and how many additional qualified enquiries would make the investment worthwhile. Then compare that with the budget and time needed to compete.

A £1,500 monthly fee may be poor value for a low-margin business but excellent value where one new customer is worth £10,000.

The calculation also changes when SEO supports repeat sales, recruitment, brand searches or AI-assisted discovery.

In my opinion, the best budget is sustainable without starving the rest of your marketing. If it is too small for ongoing delivery, an SEO audit and internal implementation plan may be the more affordable choice.

How to compare SEO quotes

Before choosing the cheapest or most expensive proposal, ask:

  • Who will plan and carry out the work?
  • Will you implement changes or only recommend them?
  • How will priorities be chosen each month?
  • Which business outcomes and supporting metrics will you track?
  • Can you explain your approach and show relevant work or references?
  • What is the minimum term, notice period and ownership of completed work?

The best SEO provider should be interested in your customers, margins, capacity and competitive position. A polished dashboard cannot compensate for vague answers.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in the UK?

For many small businesses, useful ongoing SEO falls around £750 to £2,500 per month. Limited local work can cost less, while competitive national, ecommerce and multi-location campaigns often cost more.

How much does an SEO audit cost?

UK audit prices commonly range from about £500 to several thousand pounds depending on site size, depth and whether the work includes research, explanations and a practical roadmap. Found First's SEO & GEO Visibility Audit starts from £590.

Is an SEO consultant cheaper than an agency?

Often, but not always. An independent SEO consultant usually has lower overheads and gives you direct access to the specialist. An agency may cost more but can provide several disciplines and greater delivery capacity. Compare the actual people and scope.

How long should I pay for SEO?

There is no honest universal deadline. Some fixes can help quickly, while competitive gains usually take months and continue to develop. Agree early indicators, commercial measures and review points before work starts.
