Will AI replace SEO?

AI is changing SEO, but it is not simply replacing it. Search behaviour is shifting (as always), and more answers are appearing directly inside AI systems (including AI overviews), but those systems still need reliable sources, trusted brands and structured information to build their answers.

AI still needs sources

Even when an AI tool gives a direct answer, it is usually drawing on information it has learned from, retrieved from or connected to external sources. Websites, reviews, videos, directories, news articles, comparison pages and forum discussions can all shape what the AI says. Most LLMs (Large Language Model AIs like ChatGPT) still search Google or Bing as well, so you’ll want to be present in as many places as you can be.

SEO becomes broader

This means SEO becomes broader, not irrelevant. The job is no longer only to rank one page for one keyword. It is to build a trustworthy online footprint that search engines and AI systems can understand. That includes content, technical SEO, backlinks, internal links, reviews, brand mentions, videos, schema, local listings and reputation management.

In my 12 years of SEO experience I’ve heard ‘SEO is dead’ many times, but nothing could be farther from the truth. It’s changing and expanding, as usual!

The risk of doing nothing

The real risk is not that SEO disappears overnight. The risk is that competitors adapt first. If they become the sources that AI tools cite, compare and recommend, they can influence customer decisions before a user ever visits your website. We think about our content creation as a long-term future-proofing strategy. We can also help you do the same.
