What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out means that an AI system may break one user question into several smaller searches or sub-questions before producing an answer. I think this is one of the most important GEO concepts to understand. I will break it up down below.
A simple example of query fan out
Lets say you decide to ask ChatGPT, Claude or similar something like:
“Which accountant in Gloucester is best for a small limited company?”
then the AI system may not only look for that exact phrase. In fact it almost certainly wont look only for that. It will likely investigate several related angles, such as:
- accountants in Gloucester
- small business accountants Gloucester
- limited company accounting
- accountant reviews
- local business directories
- pricing pages
- comparison articles
- accountants for company directors
- tax advice for small limited companies
The final answer will almost certainly be built from several of those sources, not just from one search result.
And very importantly – most LLMs will also use Google or other search engines to find your results. That’s why good SEO is good GEO – they’re all linked together! I personally think GEO is an extension of SEO, not a completely separate beast.
In my opinion I see query fan-out as extreme googling – or searching on steroids if you will. The more of these searches you can rank for, the better chance you have to be cited by AI when bringing you answers.
Why this matters for businesses
So, if your brand only appears for one narrow query, you may be missed.
But if your brand appears across several parts of the fan-out – for example in reviews, comparison articles, service pages, expert guides and trusted third-party mentions – you have a stronger chance of being included in the final AI-generated answer.
How this changes content strategy
GEO is not only about writing one perfect page to try and hit your target keywords.
It is about building coverage across the questions, comparisons and proof points that AI systems may use.
That includes service pages, FAQs, comparison content, case studies, reviews, directories and external mentions.
How Found First uses it
During our GEO audits, query fan-out helps us identify which hidden search paths a business is missing and which sources competitors are using to become visible in AI-generated answers.
We build and use tools that allow us to check many queries at once, so we can create a fuller picture of your visibility.
You can find more answers about GEO and AI search in our AI Visibility FAQ. Our GEO Audit includes query fan-out analysis to identify the hidden search paths your business may be missing.
