What Is a GEO Audit?

A GEO audit checks how visible, understandable and trustworthy a business is in AI-driven search systems, and what needs to change to improve that visibility.

It looks beyond normal rankings and examines whether AI tools can find, understand, verify and recommend the business.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation.

In practical terms, a GEO audit asks:

  • Does your business appear in relevant AI answers?
  • Which competitors appear instead?
  • Which sources are being cited?
  • Does your website clearly explain what you do?
  • Are your reviews and trust signals strong enough?
  • Is your brand mentioned in credible external sources?
  • Are important buyer questions missing from your content?
  • Does your website support both SEO and AI-search visibility?

My view is that a good GEO audit should not be a fashionable AI report.

It should be a practical visibility diagnosis.

Why a GEO audit looks beyond normal rankings

A GEO audit should not only ask whether your website ranks.

It should also ask whether your business is being used, mentioned or cited in AI-style answers.

A 2026 arXiv study found that nearly 30% of AI Overview cited domains did not appear in the co-displayed first-page organic results.

That matters because classic rankings and AI citations overlap, but they are not identical.

A business can rank and still be ignored in AI answers.

A source can also be cited by AI without appearing in the traditional first-page result set.

In my experience, this is exactly why a normal SEO audit and a GEO audit should not be treated as completely separate things.

You need both views.

The SEO view tells you whether your website has the right foundations.

The GEO view tells you whether those foundations are visible, understandable and supported enough to appear in AI-style recommendations.

What a GEO audit should include

A useful GEO audit can check:

  • brand mentions in AI answers
  • competitor visibility
  • cited sources
  • query fan-out
  • content gaps
  • review signals
  • third-party mentions
  • YouTube presence
  • local listings
  • schema and technical clarity
  • backlinks and authority signals
  • service page quality
  • whether your website answers the questions customers actually ask

When I review this, I am not only looking for missing keywords.

I am looking for missing evidence.

Can a system understand what the business does?

Can it verify the claim?

Can it connect the business to the right topic, service, location and use case?

Can it find enough external support to treat the business as a credible option?

That is where GEO becomes more useful than a surface-level AI visibility score.

How is it different from a normal SEO audit?

A traditional SEO audit often focuses on technical issues, rankings, content and backlinks.

A GEO audit can and should still include those fundamentals, but also asks how AI systems build recommendations.

That means looking at the whole recommendation footprint, not only the website.

In my experience, the businesses that get the best results are usually not the ones chasing a single AI trick.

They are the ones that make their whole online presence clearer:

  • clearer service pages
  • better internal linking
  • stronger reviews
  • more useful buyer-intent content
  • better local signals
  • more consistent brand mentions
  • stronger external proof
  • content that answers real decision-stage questions

That is why Found First combines SEO and GEO in one visibility review.

What should you get from a GEO audit?

The outcome should not be a vague list of AI buzzwords.

It should show:

  • which queries matter
  • where competitors appear
  • which sources influence answers
  • what content is missing
  • which trust signals need improving
  • what to fix first

At Found First, the GEO audit is part of the SEO & GEO Visibility Audit because GEO without SEO is weak.

SEO provides the foundation.

GEO analysis shows how that foundation performs inside AI search and recommendation systems.

The goal is not to “game” AI systems.

The goal is to make your business easier to understand, verify, trust and choose. Our audits are comprehensive, extremely in-depth and manually done. They will help you see exactly what your company needs to do next.

More background questions are collected in the AI Visibility FAQ. You can learn more about the full process on the GEO Audit page.
