Is GEO the new SEO?

GEO is not the new SEO in the sense that it replaces everything that came before. A better way to think about it is this: GEO is SEO adapted for a world where more searches are answered by AI systems, not only by traditional blue links.

SEO remains the foundation

In my experience, the core of good visibility has not disappeared. You still need useful content that answers real intent, pages that search engines can crawl, clear internal linking, strong topical authority, backlinks, brand trust and evidence that real people value what you do. Those SEO fundamentals are still the base layer. Google themselves say to continue to focus on best SEO practices as usual.

What GEO adds

GEO adds a new layer on top. Instead of only asking, “Can this page rank?”, we also ask, “Can an AI system understand this brand, trust it, connect it to the right topic and cite it when giving an answer?” That changes how we think about reviews, third-party mentions, structured data, comparison content, YouTube, listicles, citations and query fan-out.

The practical takeaway

Businesses should not abandon SEO and chase every new AI search trick. The smarter approach is to strengthen the SEO foundation first, then adapt the content and authority footprint so that AI systems can also understand and recommend the business.
